Show and Tell 3: Buddhism in Tang Dynasty Art

In the MET there are three pieces that are about Buddhism. Before we get this started I would like to say that all information and analysis I have received from the MET is labeled as “general information” while my analyses are labeled as “Eli’s Observations”. Due to this any error in my interpretations are solely on me and DO NOT represent the MET in any way. Also, everyone interprets art differently, so the assumptions that I make based on a certain piece could be different from your assumptions. Well, with that all said, let’s jump into a quick overview!

There are three works in this gallery. These works consist of a stele and two statues. The stele and one of the statues both depict Buddha Amitabha, while the other statue depicts Buddha Vairocana. All these pieces were made during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). For more information on these pieces go ahead and click through this curated gallery!
