Central Watchtower

General Information:

This type of pottery model was commonly used in Eastern Han burials so that the deceased would have such in the afterlife. This is another example of “spirit goods” that are characteristic of Han dynasty tombs. The watchtower is made of terracotta with a green lead glaze.

Eli’s Observations:

This piece is very detailed and has not been destroyed by time. The green glaze is still very visible through most of the piece and even small details remain. Up in the top right window of the watchtower is an observer looking out. The only locations where the glaze seems to have faded are on the base, the internal areas, and the small cracks and corners.
